What makes an astrology reading “good”?

Good astrology readings aren’t measured by how well you technically speak to the astrology – but rather by how deeply you impact the client. Good astrology readings facilitate a space for a human being to connect with their energetics in a way that serves their current sense of self and life chapter.

Their sense of self.

Their life chapter.

We have many clues about someone’s strengths, motivations, inner conflicts, and present life circumstances from their astrology. But the way those things come together for this client, in this moment, is totally unique to them.

This is where good readings begin: with the person across from you.

Human-first astrology lets the literal experience of the person you’re speaking with lead. It begins with asking questions and letting them speak.

This might feel counterintuitive at first, especially to emerging astrologers or astrologers expanding into new reading types – there’s often a desire to prove, assert, explain the astrology.

That’s what they’re paying you for, right? So shouldn’t you talk for 55 minutes at them to push as much “astrology value” as you can?

Nope 🙂

You’re not on the hook to talk at someone, I mean you could – how much do you really think your client is going to remember and integrate? Especially if you haven’t helped them connect the dots between their unique life experience and what the energetics have to say about it.

The art of giving a good reading is deeply rooted in translation. Taking what you know astrologically and making it relevant to the life your client is living.

Reminder that they're just a human exactly like you and to see them more than you see their astrology!
Remember they’re just a human too!

Components of a successful astrology reading

You get to decide as an astrologer what constitutes a successful reading. How do you want your clients to be impacted by your readings?

Do you want to bring them deeper into themselves, or give them a broad understanding of their life path? Are you interested in guiding your clients towards self acceptance, or greater alignment?

As an astrologer, decide what your values are and what type of readings you want to give. In my opinion, a good reading has four key components (the amount to which each are weighted may vary depending on your answers to the previous questions.)

Good reading ingredients:

  • Human language (words that a non-astrologer won’t get confused by)
  • Soft skills (like trust, active listening, presence, and intuitive awareness)
  • Backend structure (such as chart prep, light reading notes, your rituals that anchor you as astrologer in the background!)
  • Conversaiton forward (a back and forth conversation to extrapolate real context and stories from the human across from you so you can thread their energetics into their real life)

Soft skills required to deliver a good reading

Good astrology readings require that you hold space for the human to feel safe enough, seen enough, to answer honestly.

It takes practice, deliberate self-awareness, and the ability to stay present throughout a reading. You must be anchored in a strong sense of steadiness within, so you don’t try to ‘fix’ or turn an honest moment into a teaching opportunity when your client expresses something vulnerable.

Presence, active listening, and being more interested in what’s being said than the story you’ve concocted in your head about the type of person they must be per their chart all support you in this. Letting your intuition rather than your head or the astrology lead will help you land that plane.

Sometimes this simply means responding to what they actually said. If strong emotions come up, let the client have that experience before jumping back to the astrology.

And then ask for permission before moving on with something like, “would you like to hear what the energetics have to say about what you’re expressing?” And then relay the energetic information in a way that is supportive and further witnesses the conflict or dynamic they’re experiencing.

Take care of your environment and let it you before astrology readings!

Good astrology readings are practical

Witnessing your client is so important – but making a reading fully useful and applicable will be most memorable and impactful. It directs that feeling of being seen to a forward type of momentum again.

Where does their chart have natural strengths that can support them in this dynamic? Can you further clarify the nuance of their emotional needs and suggest activities that would support their Pisces moon? Are there any reinforcing transits that they can lean on for strength during this time?

This helps readings go from: it all makes sense.

To: and here’s what I can do with that information.

Low hanging fruit for practical astrology can look like suggesting practices that support their lunar needs, giving timing context, identifying a natural strength they can lean on, or showing them how to redirect a difficult pattern into a more supportive expression – it all depends on the examples they’re sharing and where in their chart you’re being pulled to offer as a supporting piece. (More on my take on practical astrology here!)

The important thing is that you offer somewhere to direct their mindset, energy, or attention that feels like a step forward for them they otherwise wouldn’t be aware of!

Reflection questions and integration

Check in with where you’re at:

  • Human language: are you using words like “quincux” and “8th house” or are you translating into human language that your client already knows? what types of metaphor and imagery are you drawn to?
  • Soft skills: What happens when the conversation gets emotional? how do you know you’re meeting the client there? when and how do you move on?
  • Backend Structure: are your notes supporting your presence or giving you more to juggle in your head and a script that’s limiting the potential for conversation?
  • Conversation forward: are you asking questions? are you asking followup questions to go even deeper? how do you know that your client is connecting with what you’re saying?

Knowing astrology and knowing how to give a good reading are two different skill sets. When we become astrologers there’s often tons of support and resources on the technical side – but not the human side.

Which is why I created a mentorship container for astrologers: a 1:1 space for developing the skills necessary to deliver impactful readings. This is a custom environment tailored to your goals and needs that typically involves anything from chart prep, to translating complex astrology into human language and asking better questions, to navigating the actual conversation and developing a reading style that feels practical – and undeniably yours.

A PODCAST FOR THE ASTROLOGICALLY CURIOUS AND EXISTENTIALLY INCLINED

Down to Energy explores astrology and energetic awareness as tools for staying in relationship with life as it unfolds rather than trying to explain, predict, or control every part of it. We discuss how we move through change, relate to timing, and navigate real life with greater self-awareness, wholeness, and trust in ourselves along the way.

the integration dash

The Integration Dash is a Notion-based framework for turning insight into actual lived change—because “calling in” a new version of yourself is one thing, but integrating it into your real life is quite another.

Designed around astrology’s holistic lens, the Dash helps you explore how a new intention, identity shift, or realization impacts every area of your life so it can become something you actively live, not just intellectually understand.
