Gone are the days of “don’t bring work home with you” and enforcing hard boundaries between your professional and personal worlds. Whether you work a traditional job that’s shifted to be remote or are a creative entrepreneur blending the personal and the professional, we need new ways of thinking about the separation (or lack thereof) between our work and private lives.

For a long time, I thought the answer was stronger boundaries. What I’ve come to realize is that, for me, work-life balance doesn’t create more peace – it creates more fragmentation. The more integrated my work and life have become, the less stressed I’ve felt by both.

The “right” amount of integration between work-life balance is different for everyone, but that’s exactly why this conversation is necessary.

Traditional “work-life balance”

The traditional hustle hard but “leave work at the door” mentality is real. Maybe your dad didn’t talk much about his 9-5, maybe you keep notifications “off” your work apps, maybe you have rituals that put work down at the end of the day so it doesn’t creep into your personal life (I used to have a dedicated work journal for exactly this).

Boundarying work and home can serve a valuable purpose: so you can be present with your family, make space for wellbeing and community, and rejuvenate yourself for another work week ahead. This makes sense and is why (to some degree) we do need to delineate between these inherently opposite parts of life.

For me, this is where traditional work-life balance starts to fall apart and become unsustainable. When our boundaries are upheld too fiercely, we feel fragmented and disintegrated by the endless compartmentalization of life. Maintaining separation takes energy, and it’s worth asking yourself: at what point does maintaining this boundary distract me from the parts of life I’m trying so hard to protect? Could this boundary be becoming another stressor or weight to uphold?

While separation can be supportive for maintaining wellbeing and creating space for your other values – it comes at a cost: spending your time & energy to feel less whole. Only recently have I fully embraced that another way exists.

Work and home are two sides same coin

Opposites can’t exist without each other – they’re two sides of the same coin, a lived yin & yang, if you will. So instead of seeing work vs home as a threat to one another, what if we could rewrite that story so they’re mutually supportive to each other instead?

Where work used to infringe on personal spaciousness & rejuvenation, what if work infused your personal time with purpose & pride instead? (Imagine your after-work walk becoming an opportunity for integration vs detachment. Instead of pushing work stress out of your mind, you reflect on what you’re learning about how you handle conflict, where your strengths are in high-pressure situations, and where interpersonal dynamics are challenging you in a good way.)

Where home used to be the place where you procrastinated getting work shit done and numbed Sunday scaries with half a bottle of wine, what if your personal world infused your work life with intuition, meaning, and enjoyment? (Imagine noticing the work resistance – and choosing to let your intuition & wisdom guide your next steps vs stressing yourself out more with mental strategy & forced output? Instead of trudging through writing the sales page, you reconnect with your passion & your “why” for doing this work in the first place. Suddenly the tactical task isn’t so shitty because you choose to make it mean something more.)

Instead of “not bringing work home with you,” what if work is home? Not in a hustle culture, “I live for my job” type of way. Or the glittery “living my purpose” sort of way (maybe a little). But in a simple, trusting, complete kind of way.

Putting down work-life boundaries

As I’ve found myself well out of the corporate world and 3.5+ years into running my own business – personal & professional activities, mindsets, feels, and efforts have blended more & more. For a while, I’ve had the feeling that it’s all basically the same at this point: working & living. But given the conditioning around boundaries and habitual separation of the two, I was hesitant to own it.

“If work & life are super integrated & free of boundaries – does that mean I’m not taking care of myself??”

That was the old mentality talking.

Integration was happening because I was living it – my perception just hadn’t caught up yet, my power of choice still waiting to be realized.

The more embodied in my work I became, the less I needed the “work journal” to boundary my days, and the less anxiety I felt about how I was going to make my business successful. The more I’ve allowed work & home to integrate, the less stressed about work & life I’ve become…

If work stress wreaks havoc on your mind at night, it isn’t a sign you need more boundaries – it’s a sign you need more embodiment. More doing it your way, more making work feel like you – like home.

My mind’s all caught up now, hence this piece.

Gone are the days of hard switching from one to the other. I’m in an era of embracing integration, of experiencing work and home in the same breath.

Overhearing my friend Xanthe oh so casually comment that her “work & life are so integrated at this point; it’s fine because it’s not harming anything,” allowed me to claim this thing I’ve been living but not owning.

The next sections will help you identify what’s true for you, so you can uncover where integration is already being lived – and where it’s waiting to be claimed.

Four signs work and life have integrated

I’ve come up with four signs that your work and personal lives have blended into your unique version of integration. Maybe this triggers a mindset shift or a more fluid way of taking action – maybe you free up some energy by uncovering boundaries you no longer need.

If you relate to embodying any of the qualities below – or recognize yourself moving in these directions – that probably means you have a unique blending of work & home waiting to be claimed.

1. Your guard is down

You keep it real at work. You don’t hide. You’re yourself. You aim to show up embodied, authentic, and imperfect. You show the ways you’re still in process, still figuring it out, still human.

(Like how you’re not changing your outfit just to show up on stories. Like how you’re sharing that vulnerable thing that happened in college because you know it’ll allow your community to feel seen. Like how you’re not pretending to have all the answers. Like how you’re not forcing yourself to be the same version of yourself you were last quarter.)

The more you are yourself, the more success you experience at work.

2. You’re in relationship with your work

It’s a two-way street between you and your work. Insights, solutions, and expressions cross over these territories. There’s a dynamic conversation between the two happening in overt & subtle ways.

Sometimes your personal experiences translate directly into a work creation. (Like how the name for your next program came to you during a yoga class. Like how that creative problem was solved by something unrelated your partner said at dinner.)

And sometimes your work life teaches you about yourself on a personal level. (Like how your mentee’s reflections taught you something profound about life itself.)

There’s reciprocity.

3. You have a work family

Your peers & community “click” with you – there’s a sense of belonging & camaraderie. You feel personally held & recognized for the HUMAN that you are in your professional setting. (Like how I was “social-chair” in my corporate days & always have a work wife bestie. Like how you’re diving into your DMs not to cultivate sales but to show up for your community. Like how your energy isn’t leaking – it’s overflowing, by who you engage with on a day-to-day basis.)

And just like real families, the people around you challenge you. They inspire you. They wake you up. Their presence alone pulls more out of you. (Like how the way she just showed up activates something in you in a good way, there’s a part of you begging to come forward that relates to what you’re witnessing in the external.)

Your work tribe supports, challenges, and inspires you.

4. It’s heartfelt and fun

You’re here to play. Inspiration runs rampant. Your creations are yours. And because of that, they mean something. You’ve infused feeling into your work (like how your personal journaling practice revealed something you know would be powerful & helpful for your audience to receive too.)

You feel joyful and proud of the ways you are personally represented in the creations and environment of your work. (Like how, sure it’s not ALL fun & games, but it’s easy to keep showing up for your mission & purpose. There are ways you can bring in playfulness & silly into your work day.)

Work is an experience to be explored every day.

  • Which boundaries genuinely support your wellbeing – and which ones are heavy to maintain?
  • In what ways have work and home already started blending in your life?
  • How does your personal life make you better at your work?
  • How does your work impact who you are outside of it?
  • If work-life balance isn’t the goal, what is?
