Let’s talk astrocartography. Something the map-loving, directionally-savvy human in me is absolutely obsessed with. Astrocartography can unfortunately get reduced and misunderstood by a lot of clickable, pop-astrology out there. It’s not about finding “the perfect place for love” or your career – or anything else for that matter. It’s about understanding the way in which location impacts your energy.

Certain geographies bring certain parts of your chart – of you – to the surface. Maybe Mexico City brings your Cancer Moon to the forefront and you wear your heart on your sleeve more there. Maybe Barcelona highlights your Aries Mars and you take up running or step into a leadership role.

Why locational astrology matters

Your astrocartography can inform and contextualize decisions about travel and relocating – while helping you integrate those experiences after the fact. Maybe your astrocartography gives reason to why you felt so isolated on that drip to the Bahamas, or reveals specifically what about Rome resonated on such a deep level.

As with all astrology, astrocartography validates the nuance of your human experience in a particular place, helping you relate to it, work with it, and feel empowered by that context. That empowerment comes from being able to make intentional choices about where you travel, so your desired experiences and intentions have a greater opportunity to come to life

Energetically informed travel decision-making

When it comes to using your astrocartography for travel-based decisions – an example comes to mind of a client who used her’s to decide which retreat to attend. She had an intention of going on a rejuvenating, communal, and restful retreat. She was choosing between two and her astrocartography clearly showed that one of them was much more aligned with her desired experience. The more-aligned option showed her Venutian energy (connection, nourishment) at the forefront of her experience – while would have brought out her Mars energy (more action and adventure forward). She ended up going to the Venutian leaning retreat in Finland and can confirm: it was everything she wanted and more.

Another client turned to her astrocartography to contextualize a move – she was feeling restless and isolated in the city she was living in and desired feel more flow, creativity, and femininity. By the end of our session she said, “I know where I need to go” after her astrocartography validated the tone, energy, and opportunity’s presented at the locations she was considering.

Think of astrocartography as less about defining what a “good place” or “bad place” is – and more about what actually aligns with you, your intentions, and your desired experiences.

How to approach your astrocatrography

Intention and understanding your desired experience very much matters when referencing your astrocartography. Rather than simply diving into your map, the lines cross crossing all over the world – start with the human in you, today – to inform how this version of you could show up as you move around the world. Context on who you are, your chapter of life, and what you’re wanting from the future always deepens the value of an astrological session while making it more practical too.

Remember that every location is so much more than just the closest astrocartography “line” that’s near it – it’s all of you. Say you’re going to a Sun-MC line because you want visibility in your career – well, you’re not only having career experiences in that location, are you? You’re resting at home, you’re mingling with the community, you’re exploring a new self expression. It’s essential to consider how the rest of you operates at that location, too. There are techniques within a practice of astrocartography (relocation charts) that show how the rest of you experiences a particular location.

Because we’re never just one of our parts – or having siloed experiences. All of us comes along for the ride, always.

What to take from this article? That astrocartography isn’t about finding the “right” place. It’s about understanding which parts of you come forward where – and whether that actually serves what you’re creating for yourself.
